Question:
Ok, it's a beautiful evening on the lake and the hum of your engine and the wind in your face is making you so relaxed as you notice a green light up ahead.

In a short time you have determined that you are probably on a collision course with this vessel.

Which answer is correct? (careful I'm being tricky here...)

Feel free to add a reply

Choices:
A. You are looking at the starboard side of this boat. You are the "Stand On" vessel. Hold course and speed.
B. You are looking at the port side of this boat. You are the "Give Way" vessel. Alter course and/or speed.
C. You are looking at the port side of this boat. You are the "Stand On" vessel. Hold course and speed.
D. You are looking at the starboard side of this boat. You are the "Give Way" vessel. Alter course and/or speed.

Technically, the correct answer is D.

You are looking at the starboard side of this vessel which would normally make you the stand on vessel. However in this case you do not also see the white light at the same time. This would indicate that the other boat is a sail boat under sail thus making you the give way boat.

Note I said "technically". In reality this could very well be a power boat with something blocking the white light or the light isn't working. In this case, you would be the stand on vessel, but also in reality the other person very likely doesn't know this or doesn't see you. So, you would probably still have to alter course to prevent the collision.

Another situation you can run into is a sailboat which has its masthead (front white) light on. This technically would indicate that this boat is also under power which in the situation above would make him the give way vessel. However the reality of this is that the sail boater may just have this light on to illuminate the sail, so he is still expecting to be treated as a sailboat under sail.

Please feel free add your own comments and experiences to this thread.

Is the class going to be this technical? I was hoping for true/false questions.

I like to start my exercising off slow and taper from there.

oops.....sorry. Don't want to scare anyone off. No, my questions are "trickier" and I have probably added too much information with my answers for someone that is completely new to this. So...don't let me scare any of you off from the boating course.

Also, many of you out there probably have as much or more boating experience and knowledge than I do, so feel free to reply with your comments or questions. Again, I am definitely not an expert! (I can add a few more "stupid stories" on the Capn Crunch forum to prove that) Big Grin

As long as we have each other. We'll never run out of problems.
